The power of taking action and letting go of attachment to the results

This week I had an appointment in Montpellier, France. So it was an excuse for me to travel again. I like to be on the go, but after five years of doing so alone, most of the time, I’m getting a little weary of it. Seeing new places and eating different foods is exciting, but the challenge of traveling alone is wearing off.

When I got the travel bug several years ago, it was super exciting. How would I manage to figure out how to get where I needed to go? How would I be able to calm my nerves and take in the sheer energy that traveling brings with it? But now I know how to do it. I know I can find my way around airports, metro stations, and foreign cities. So when I found out I had to go on another trip, I truly wanted to explore Montpellier, but I wasn’t looking forward to doing it alone.

However, instead of fretting or even just going for the day, I did something different. I reached out.

I’m a member of an expat community website. I have been since before I moved to France, but I haven’t been a very active member. I’m not near the city where they have events. But I remembered meeting my friend Irena on that site three years earlier. So a week before my trip to Montpellier, I decided to place an announcement saying I was open to meeting up for coffee if anyone was free. I heard nothing but crickets for the first four days. That was fine, however. I remembered Uncle Bob saying, nothing ventured nothing gained. And I thought, if no one responds, I won’t have lost anything either.

Then on the fourth day, Judith responded. She could meet me on Tuesday! How delightful. I’d get to connect with someone as a part of my trip. And then, the afternoon that I arrived, Alex contacted me to see if I had plans for that evening. As luck would have it, I was free. We met and chatted over dinner, and he connected me to two other very interesting people.

I don’t know why I am so surprised at these results. Perhaps because I had made an honest effort and then let go of any expectations for the outcome. I’d opened myself up for the possibility of connecting and voilà!

What isn’t suiting you? What could you do to change the situation?

Open yourself up to new possibilities, and don’t obsess over what will come of your efforts. Stay positive and allow the universe to answer your slightest invitation.
